US Fast-Track Options
Security and border control waits can be lengthy, but they don't have to be!
Traveling with children, those with disabilities, or individuals who may find crowds challenging can be stressful due to long lines. Security screening waits and passport lines can be especially tedious. Various options can expedite security and customs processes.
Security Screening: TSA Precheck & Cares and CLEAR
TSA PreCheck is a trusted traveler program that allows for selected members to enjoy expedited and reduced screening. Members can keep shoes and belts on, leave laptops and liquids in bags.
TSA PreCheck is good for five years. The initial application cost is $78 and includes an interview. Renewals can be done online and is slightly cheaper at $70. Many credit cards geared towards travel cover either the TSA PreCheck or the Global Entry fee every five years.
Minors do not need to be enrolled to accompany parents in the TSA PreCheck as long as they are on the same itinerary. TSA PreCheck must be on your boarding pass (either printed or mobile pass). If it is not, see the ticket counter to add your known traveler number and get an updated boarding pass.
TSA Cares is a free service for travelers needing additional assistance. Eligible passengers include those with disabilities, medical conditions, or language barriers navigate security. This includes those traveling with a breast pump and breast milk. TSA Cares provides support, but does not mean faster or reduced processing. But it should provide a more sensitive screening process to those who need it.
Request assistance online at least 72 hours before flight. If your flight is within 72 hours, call (855) 787-2227 to request additional support. Arrive at TSA and notify them of your Cares request.
CLEAR is a private expedited screening service at select airports and stadiums. It is a tiered service. You can reserve a spot in the security line at participating airports for free at select airports or purchase a one-time fast pass or QR code to use CLEAR services. Minors can accompany parents for free.
CLEAR+ costs $199 annually and $119 for each additional adult on the account. Discounts available for military and government employees and through several travel credit cards. CLEAR+ can also be bundled with TSA PreCheck for a discount. CLEAR+ includes CLEAR Concierge which provides assistance from curb to gate. This can be a significant benefit for disabled individuals that do not want to rely on airport services.
Customs Options
Global Entry is a program that allows for expedited clearance at the US Border for pre-approved travelers. Global Entry costs $120 for 5 years and includes TSA PreCheck. Permanent US residents may also apply as well as select foreign nationals. Beginning in October 2024, children applicants do not have to pay if one of their legal guardians is enrolled. Children will need an email to enroll and cannot be a duplicate of another applicant.
The application is online and requires an in-person interview. Once you have been conditionally approved, you can interview upon arrival. The hours and availability vary by airport so check before you travel. You will need proof of residency along with your passport - a driver’s license, mortgage or rental statement or utility bill (not needed for minors)
The Global Entry Card is a Real ID, shows citizenship, and, once activated, can be used for the NEXUS and SENTRI lanes. NEXUS provides expedited screening between Canada and the US only. SENTRI is pre-screening for US land border crossings to Mexico.
Mobile Passport Control is a free app for entering customs data before arrival. MPC has a reserved line at participating airports. The app allows family profiles (up to 12) to handle screening together. Enter everyone’s passport details, make your declarations, and breeze through customs.
Do note that the submission is only good for 4 hours. The app will save passport details, but take your selfies and make your declarations while taxiing upon arrival. You can also use MPC if you are a Canadian citizen or are returning visitors with an ESTA.
Top Picks
For families and frequent travelers who travel predominantly in the US, TSA PreCheck is a clear winner. Global Entry is well worth it for those traveling internationally at least once a year. With the change in fee for minor applicants, Global Entry is more affordable for families than in the past.
